The 10 Struggles You Face When You Have a Unique Name

From Pretty Little Liars actress Troian Bellisario to Gossip Girl alums Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, categorically different names are the new norm. In case you needed further proof, Mad Men star January Jones and hottie Channing Tatum as well as Awkward’s Greer Grammer all have super original names that may seem awesome to an outsider (let’s be honest, they are awesome), but that doesn’t mean these names don’t have their issues.

Seriously, everyday celebrities are naming their kids after new, funky things like fruits (ex. Apple Martin) and directions (ex. North West), so they must be super cool, right? Sadly, that’s not always the case. There are definitely struggles that come with having a totally one-of-a-kind name and we understand. For all you people named Lake, Rydel, Kingston and Poppy out there, we feel your pain.

1. People always think you are lying. Why would you lie about your name? You wouldn’t.

2. Souvenirs don’t exist for you. Remember when all of your friends would go on a trip and come back with a cool sticker that had their name on it? What about those awesome name bracelets? Ya, you never got one of those, because they never had your name on the rack. Life is rough!

3. “Wait, what did you say?” Having to repeat yourself is the absolute worst. Just because someone hasn’t heard your name before doesn’t mean you should have to say it, like, 10 times.

4. “With a name like that you should definitely be famous.” Okay, that’s not how fame even works. Just because you have a killer name doesn’t mean you should automatically be an actress. What if you want to be a teacher or a pilot?

5. “How do you spell that?” Sometimes you feel like you are going crazy with how many questions get asked once you say your name. Spelling it wouldn’t be that bad… except that you spell it like 20 times throughout the day, which gets tiring.

6. Your penmanship needs to be flawless. If you have a “complicated” name, you have to write it perfectly or else someone will misread it or mistake it for another name that is NOT your name. It’s a real struggle.

7. “What were your parents thinking?” They were thinking that having a name that is different is cool. What were YOUR parents thinking?

8. Starbucks is a nightmare. “Lily? Lily? Lily?” “Oh, did you mean Leighton? Okay, then yes, that is my double skinny frappuccino. My bad for not understanding that’s what you meant.” Come on baristas, get it together.

9. “So, were your parents are total hippies?” What does this even mean? Your parent doesn’t have to be a hippie or on drugs to be creative and name you something original. God.

10. You’ve considered saying a different name to save yourself time in certain situations. You don’t actually do it because you love your name, but wouldn’t it be awesome to say Emma at a restaurant and not have any followup questions asked?
